Each day while living in beautiful West Vancouver, I look around and realize how very fortunate we are. We live in a community with exceptional public and private schools, two incredible recreation centres, a wonderful community swimming pool, hockey arena, soccer fields, baseball diamonds, and our own local ski hill on Cypress Mountain, one of the venues for the 2010 Winter Olympics. Our children are so very fortunate to grow up in such an incredible community, they are blessed. Unfortunately, not all children are so lucky, and must endure a life of struggle, domestic turmoil, isolation and loneliness. Some of these children move from foster home to foster home, never finding the bond with a loving adult that is essential for their development. Their lives are devoid of love, compassion and kindness, and many of them end up walking the streets, lost, misguided and with broken hearts. These children, these very unfortunate children, are still our children. We, as a caring and compassionate society, must do what we can to give them the love, kindness and direction they require to lead productive and fruitful lives. We must give them a reason to believe in themselves, to believe in life itself, and this is why I have chosen to volunteer my time and energy towards helping Covenant House, a charity known worldwide, and with two locations in downtown Vancouver, dedicated to helping our homeless youth.
